New Delhi, June 26 -- Islamic New Year, also known as the Hijri year, marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar with the first day of the month - Muharram. In India the Islamic New Year begins on Friday, June 27 after the sighting of Muharram crescent moon. The month began in Saudi Arabia following Magrib prayers a day earlier, which is Thursday, June 26.
