New Delhi, May 26 -- US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will postpone the planned 50% tariff on European Union goods-from the original date of June 1 to July 9 in order to to buy time for negotiations with the bloc. The announcement comes after a Sunday phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who, according to Trump, said that she "wants to get down to serious negotiations."

"I told anybody that would listen, they have to do that," Trump told reporters on Sunday in Morristown, New Jersey. According to Trump, Von der Leyen vowed to "rapidly get together and see if we can work something out."
