New Delhi, May 19 -- China will play a 'constructive' role in realising a 'lasting ceasefire' between India and Pakistan, it said on Monday as Islamabad's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar arrived in Beijing for a meeting with Chinese diplomat Wang Yi.

Dar, who is in China for a three-day visit, is the first major Pakistani official to come to Beijing after India targetted terror base camps of his country under Operation Sindoor on May 7 as its reply to the 26 lives lost in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attacks.

Dar was expected to discuss a range of issues with all-weather ally China, including India's decision to put the crucial Indus Water Treaty in abeyance.
