India, Aug. 11 -- India is preparing to celebrate its 78th Independence Day on August 15. Marked with great pomp and grandeur, the day commemorates the end of over 200 years of British rule. On August 15, 1947, after a long and hard-fought struggle, India emerged as an independent nation. Since then, the occasion has been observed annually by hoisting the national flag and paying tribute to the heroes who made this freedom possible.
