India, Nov. 6 -- Hyperuricemia refers to an increase in uric acid levels in the body, a condition that can silently progress into painful gout or kidney stones.

According to Dr. Natasha Negalur More, Consultant Rheumatologist at KIMS Hospitals, uric acid is a natural byproduct of the breakdown of chemicals called purines, found in foods such as red meat, seafood, and beer. Normally, uric acid dissolves in the blood and is removed by the kidneys. However, when the body produces too much uric acid or fails to eliminate it efficiently, it begins to accumulate in the blood-a condition known as hyperuricemia.
