DEHRADUN, 13 Sept: Professor Ofelia QF Araujo from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, said, "Cities are responsible for 70 per cent of the energy-related greenhouse gas emissions in the world, but at the same time, they also account for 80 per cent of the global GDP. This means we now have to shift from fossil fuels to sustainable energy."

Addressing the international conference at Graphic Era Deemed University, Professor Ofelia said that today, 59 per cent of the world's urban population lives in cities with over one million people. In such a situation, adopting clean energy and smart technologies is the only way to secure the future.
