India, Jan. 2 -- African civil society organisations have criticised TotalEnergies' sponsorship of the Africa Cup of Nations, calling it an attempt to "greenwash" its fossil fuel operations.
Campaigners point to controversial projects including Mozambique LNG and the East African Crude Oil Pipeline as evidence of environmental and human rights harms.
Activists are urging African football authorities to adopt fossil-free sponsorship rules, similar to bans once imposed on tobacco advertising.
The criticism comes as major financial institutions withdraw support from TotalEnergies' Mozambique LNG project over security and human rights risks.
TotalEnergies has not publicly responded to the campaigners' latest allegations.
