New Delhi, Sept. 2 -- On the night of August 30, 2025, Chennai city experienced a spell of intense rain, especially between 10:00 pm and 12:00 am. The torrential rainfall in some areas can be categorised as cloud bursts, according to the official definitions of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the IMD in Chennai.
The IMD defines a cloud burst as the occurrence of 100 mm of rainfall in one hour over a small area of 20-30 square km. There were five reports of rainfall above 100 mm/hr in Chennai on August 30.
