Washington, Jan. 13 -- US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday discussed developments in the Middle East with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

State department, in a statement, said that Pompeo reiterated the need for NATO to play a greater role in the region and stressed the US commitment to the UN-facilitated peace process in Syria.

Tensions rose after US killed Iranian military General Qasem Soleimani and Iran retaliated by firing missiles at a US military base in Iraq. This fresh US-Iran escalation led the latter to abandon from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal.
