Shimla, Feb. 23 -- Taking a cue from the previous Congress government, the Himachal Pradesh Council of Ministers on Tuesday took a major decision of going for direct election in Municipal Corporation polls on party symbols.

Resolving to consolidate the vote bank, the BJP-ruled state government, in a Cabinet meeting, decided to have MC polls on party symbols.

For the purpose, necessary amendments in Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 1994 and Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Elections Rules, 2012 have been done.

These amendments would pave way for the conduct of elections to the Municipal Corporations on Party symbols, provide reservation for OBCs, would have the provision of disqualification on grounds of defection, and ...
