Tempura traditionally consists of battered and deep-fried seafood and vegetables. The dish developed in Japan after Portuguese missionaries brought Western-style cooking to the country. As it became firmly part of the cuisine, two distinct styles develop. Edo-style tempura uses a batter made with water, eggs, and wheat flour, and is served with grated daikon and a dipping sauce.
