India, May 20 -- Meghalaya is witnessing a steadily rising footfall, with tourists flocking to savour the beauty of Cherrapunji, Mawsynram, and Dawki. However, the surge in tourism has also contributed to mounting plastic pollution. To combat this issue and as a step towards eco-friendly tourism, the Meghalaya government has rolled out the 'Green Deposit' initiative to instil a sense of civic responsibility among travellers.

Meghalaya's Green Deposit initiative aims to minimise plastic waste and safeguard the state's ecosystem. The scheme discourages travellers from littering tourist areas, reducing tourism's environmental footprint.
