Srinagar, April 23 -- On most days, Baisaran in Pahalgam is full of life. Horses trot up grassy slopes, children run after each other, and tourists pose with snow-covered peaks in the background. But this Tuesday, everything changed. Gunfire rang out across the meadows. When it stopped, 26 people were dead, two of them foreign tourists.

Locals say the screams echoed through the hills. Picnic baskets, laughter, and cameras were replaced by silence and panic. Blood stained the grass.
