SRINAGAR, Oct. 8 -- Two militants were killed in an encounter with government forces in Awantipora town of Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Tuesday, a police spokesperson said. It was the first gunfight between militants and the government forces after August 5, the day Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 was revoked and the state bifurcated into two Union Territories.

He said the gun battle broke out between militants and security forces on the outskirts of Awantipora this morning following a tip about the presence of militants in the area.

The police spokesman identified the killed militants as Ufaid Farooq Lone alias Abu Muslim resident of Awantipora and Abbas Bhat.
