Dhaka, Jan. 9 -- The Supreme Court's Appellate Division has set January 23 as the date for the hearing of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam's review petition, seeking reconsideration of his death sentence for crimes against humanity, including murder and genocide, committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

On Thursday, a five-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed, issued the order, as per local media reports.

Earlier, on July 19, 2020, ATM Azharul Islam filed the review petition with the relevant branch of the Appellate Division.

The 23-page petition presented a total of 14 arguments for reconsideration.

On December 30, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sentenced ATM Azhar to death.
