Dhaka, May 15 -- Officials and employees of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) observed a pen-down strike for a second consecutive day on Thursday, demanding the withdrawal of a government ordinance that seeks to split the revenue authority into two entities.

The strike disrupted normal operations at the NBR, with many activities, including revenue collection, coming to a near standstill.

Some staff alleged that attempts were being made by higher authorities to suppress the protest with support from outside groups.

Although the NBR chairman and other senior officials were reportedly scheduled to brief the media on the ongoing overall situation, the briefing did not take place.
