Dhaka, May 29 -- The Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) has suspended its nationwide strike, which had led to the closure of jewellery shops across the country in protest against the arrest of its vice-president Md Riponul Hasan.

In a press statement, BAJUS claimed that Riponul Hasan was arrested by DB police on May 28 in a "false and harassing" case based on a fabricated political identity. They asserted that he has never held a political position nor been affiliated with any political party, according to local media.

Jewellers across the country observed a day-long protest on Thursday, including rallies and human chains, demanding Hasan's unconditional release and fair treatment.
