Dhaka, Dec. 11 -- The price of commercially produced eggs has fallen recently, resulting in loss to farmers.

Farmers said high price for the animal product over the last few years motivated them to increase production, surpassing the demand and leading to very low egg prices and losses to them.

Farmers sold per piece of white eggs at Tk 7.10 and brown eggs at Tk 8.10 in Rajshahi on 4 December. They estimate that they are now sustaining a loss of at least Tk 1 per egg on average.

Zearul Islam (32), a farmer of Kolipur in Godagari, Rajshahi, said, "We've seen egg price decreases during winter, but this year the price is too low for us to survive. Perhaps the production is much higher than the market demand."
