Dhaka, July 9 -- The National Citizen Party (NCP) will not be allowed to use 'Shapla' (water lily) as its election symbol, the Election Commission has said, citing a policy decision to exclude it from the official election symbol list.

The NCP, formed by youth leaders from last year's mass protests, had requested 'Shapla' while applying for party registration. The EC said the symbol will not be allocated to any party in order to protect the dignity of national symbols.

The current list of 69 election symbols is expected to expand to over 100 ahead of the next general election.
