India's dairy industry is considered as one of the most successful development programmes in the post-Independence period. The evolution of our dairy industry dates back to the early 1950s when the iconic Varghese Kurien laid the foundation of Amul, a co-operative model, which enabled the farmers in the Anand district of Gujarat to sell their milk at the highest possible price without interference from middlemen.
