New Delhi, Sept. 19 -- German enterprise software major SAP on Thursday announced the launch of its SAP Sovereign Cloud in India, a move the company described as a milestone in the country's journey toward digital sovereignty. The offering is designed in compliance with India's National Information Security Policy & Guidelines (NISPG) and is targeted at governments and regulated industries seeking to modernise with cloud and AI while retaining control over sensitive data and systems.
Against the backdrop of shifting global dynamics and the rapid rise of AI-driven innovation, the SAP Sovereign Cloud strengthens the foundation of digital transformation across four dimensions-data, operational, technical, and legal sovereignty. Together, these controls enable regulated sectors such as financial services, defence, and public sector enterprises to build secure and compliant digital ecosystems.
Built as a full-stack framework that spans infrastructure, platform, applications, and AI, the Sovereign Cloud leverages SAP's sovereign controls alongside an open-source foundation. Customers can choose from multiple deployment models, including SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site, hosted in their own data centres, or a hyperscaler-based model in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). SAP said the flexibility is designed to align with diverse operational and sovereignty requirements, complementing its broader global strategy.

The announcement comes alongside the inauguration of a Secure Operational Facility within SAP Labs India's newly opened Innovation Park campus in Bengaluru. The facility has been purpose-built to meet stringent requirements of India's national security authorities and is fully aligned with government security policies. SAP said the centre will serve as a strategic hub for compliance assurance, innovation, and co-creation of sovereign solutions with Indian customers.

The company reported double-digit growth in cloud revenue in India in FY24, driven by adoption across public sector, BFSI, and manufacturing verticals. The company believes that the launch of the Sovereign Cloud is expected to accelerate this momentum, as demand for compliant, AI-enabled digital infrastructure rises across the country's regulated industries.
