New Delhi, Aug. 22 -- ChatGPT-maker OpenAI is establishing an office in New Delhi, its first in India. The company has already registered a legal entity in the country and is now scouting for talent.

An on-ground presence in India will help OpenAI build partnerships with the government, businesses, and developers in the country. The company has committed to working with the government in its IndiaAI Mission. Notably, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman visited New Delhi during his world tour in June and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in the statement. OpenAI is also set to host its first Developer Day in India this year.

OpenAI has not yet confirmed the location of its New Delhi office, but it has already set up a legal entity in India and begun hiring a local team. The company plans to share more information about its first office and upcoming initiatives in the coming months.

India is the second-largest market for ChatGPT by users. The announcement of an India office is the culmination of a series of India-specific announcements made by the company in recent times.

To be sure, in April last year, the company appointed its first employee in India, Pragya Mishra, a former Truecaller and Meta executive Pragya Mishra as its public policy and partnerships lead in India. Further, this week, OpenAI also rolled out a pocket-friendly Go version for its Indian users. It is a Rs.399 per-month subscription plan built for India. Other AI providers such as Perplexity, Anthropic, and Google also have premium offerings for their Indian customers.
