Sri Lanka, Sept. 21 -- The Puttalam District, which accounts for nearly 60 percent of Sri Lanka's annual salt production, has launched its harvesting season, with producers reporting record yields this year. Sri Lanka's total salt requirement stands at around 180,000 metric tons, for food and industrial purposes. The harvesting process spans around seven months, and this year's unusually favourable dry weather has boosted production significantly.

Local salt producers said that if the dry conditions persist, Puttalam could supply the bulk of the country's annual salt demand, marking an unprecedented contribution from the region.
