Sri Lanka, Oct. 12 -- Senior officials of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation will meet shortly to discuss measures to promote egg consumption in the country and explore export opportunities, following reports of a national egg surplus, the Sunday Observer learns.

Head of the Department of Animal Science at the University of Ruhuna, Prof. Indunil Pathirana, said yesterday that the country's annual egg production this year is expected to exceed three billion eggs.

He attributed the sharp fluctuations in retail egg prices to the market being dominated by a single dealer "who has not even seen a poultry farm".
