Singapore, Nov. 22 -- More young people here are seeking help for mental health challenges, according to Chat, the youth outreach arm of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

It noted that around 1,700 young people approached Chat - short for Community Health Assessment Team - for help last year, up from 1,580 in 2017 and just 50 when it started a decade ago.

Dr Charmaine Tang, 35, Chat's deputy programme director and a consultant at IMH, told The Straits Times that the increase over the past 10 years has been "exponential", adding that this year's client numbers will continue to rise.

"We have gotten the trust of young people... Young people are aware of us, they are willing to come and seek help, to speak to someone," she said.
