NEW DELHI, March 20 -- The Indian government, at the end of its current tenure in office, has appointed a retired judge of the Supreme Court as its first anti-corruption watchdog.

Pinaki Chandra Ghose, a retired Supreme Court judge who has worked with the National Human Rights Commission, was appointed as India's first 'Lokpal' or anti-corruption ombudsman, an official communique from the President's office, Rashtrapati Bhavan, said late on Tuesday.

He will head a panel established by order of the Supreme Court which sought to know why the Indian government had not appointed such an authority to oversee allegations of corruption in government.
