Hyderabad, Nov. 25 -- Long Pepper, not only spices up Indian cuisine but has the potential to treat Colon Cancer.
According to a consortia of researchers led by the National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela), Odisha, Piperlongumine, an active compound of long pepper (pippali/thippili/maghaun) is effective in treating colon cancer cells.
Colon cancer is a disease in which the cells grow uncontrollably in the large intestine of the body, forming tumours. It is one of the most common types of cancer globally. According to a WHO report, in 2022, nearly 1.9 million new cases and almost 900,000 deaths due to colon cancer were reported.
