Manila, Jan. 15 -- The government has issued new guidelines to step up the efforts to trace close contacts of individuals who are found to be positive for the B.1.1.7 SARS-CoV-2 variant, also known as the United Kingdom (UK) variant.

In a resolution approved on Thursday, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) has ordered the expansion of contact tracing by including the third-generation contacts of people with the new variant of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

All close contacts also have to undergo a facility-based 14-day quarantine to limit the spread of new coronavirus variant, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement on Friday.
