Bhubaneswar, May 17 -- Malkangiri: In an unfortunate incident, as many as three villagers were killed on Monday during an encounter between CRPF Jawans and Maoists in a jungle at Silger security camp in Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh which shares border with Malkangiri district.

According to reports, the fire-fight broke out after Naxals opened fire at a newly set up CRPF base camp along the inter- state border.

Since the past few days, a group of villagers were staging a protest in Silger, considered as a core area of the Red Rebels, against the security base camp which was set up last week.

According to police, the villagers had staged the protest allegedly under pressure from Naxals.
