Bhubaneswar, Dec. 2 -- Two people from Karnataka are first in India to have tested positive for the Omicron variant of Covid-19. This information was shared by the Health Ministry on Thursday. The patients are two men aged 66 and 46 whose identities have not been disclosed to protect their privacy.

The cases of Omircron variant were detected through genome sequencing efforts of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) of 37 laboratories. The Health Ministry said Both the cases are mild and there are no severe symptoms so far and all persons who came in contact have been traced and are being tested.
