Sambalpur, Oct. 30 -- In yet another incident of alleged medical negligence, HIV-contaminated surgical equipment were reportedly used for performing dental surgery on 12 patients at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla.

According to reports, intermaxillary fixation of an HIV-affected patient, a road accident victim, was carried out at the Dental department of the hospital on October 28 by Dr. Prashanta Kumar Swain. Later, dental surgery on 12 patients was allegedly performed using the equipment, which were used for the HIV-affected person, without sterilisation.

As the matter came to fore, the concerned HOD wrote to the higher authorities of the hospital for a probe into the incident.
