New Delhi, Aug. 19 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is all set to roll out a series of moves to put a check on the usage of water in the agriculture sector that uses as high as 89 per cent of the country's entire groundwater.

As most parts of the country routinely face water related issues in the wake of ground water depletion, the new measures, including making drip irrigation mandatory for sugarcane, will try to ensure sustainable methods of cultivation.

Also, the government is likely to bring in policies to shift a major chunk of rice cultivation to rain-surplus regions of the country from Punjab and Haryana, to ensure that the groundwater doesn't come under excessive pressure in major parts of the northern India.
