New Delhi, Aug. 6 -- A US Army sergeant shot and injured five fellow soldiers at Fort Stewart on Wednesday, prompting a brief lockdown at one of the country's largest military bases. The gunman, identified as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, was subdued by fellow troops and taken into custody within minutes, officials said.
The shooting took place shortly before 11 a.m. at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team complex, according to base authorities. The installation, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is home to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division.
Brig. Gen. John Lubas said Radford used a personal handgun-not a military-issued weapon-and opened fire in the area where he worked. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
