New Delhi, Aug. 6 -- US President Donald Trump on Wednesday imposed a 25 per cent additional tariff on Indian imports, raising the total tariff to 50 per cent. In an executive order, Trump said he was imposing the new tariff over India's continued oil purchase from Russia.

Trump's order comes days after he threatened India with a 'penalty' if it continued to import oil from Russia, which is at war with Ukraine - a conflict that the US President has repeatedly asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to end.

The tariffs would go into effect 21 days after the signing of the order, meaning that both India and Russia might have time to negotiate with the administration on the import taxes.
