New Delhi, Feb. 2 -- Prices of cigarettes have surged significantly after the excise duty hike from February 1, burning a hole in your pocket. The hike depends on the length of cigarette sticks - the longer, the costlier.
Starting February 1, the additional duty on cigarettes is being applied over and above 40 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST).
According to the government's notification:
1. Unfiltered cigarettes shorter than 65 mm will attract an excise duty of Rs.2,050 per 1,000 sticks
2. Filtered cigarettes shorter than 65 mm will be taxed at Rs.2100 per 1,000 sticks.
3. The duty on Medium-length cigarettes (65-70 mm) will be as high as Rs.3.6-4 per stick.
