SHILLONG, June 19 -- Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) common candidate, Dr WR Kharlukhi defeated congress candidate Kennedy Khyriem with 39-19 votes and emerged victorious in the fight for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya.Voting started early at 9 am and went on till 4 pm. Out of the total 59 votes which was polled a total number of 39 votes was polled in favour of Kharlukhi while a total number of 19 votes polled in favour of Khyriem. While one vote was rejected another vote was not cast as KHNAM MLA, Adelbert Nongrum abstained from the election.

Soon after the results were announced, the State president of NPP, WR Kharlukhi said that he will prioritise fulfilling the aspirations of the people of the state.
