Sri Lanka, Jan. 16 -- Children are not dependent beings (unless they are born with physical and/or mental challenges). they are made to be so by us adults. They come to us with blazing neurons and an eagerness to explore, learn, re-learn; enthusiasm and curiosity are their middle names. We the adults thwart that energy. We read too much into their expressions and find ways to pick holes in their journey of learning. Every parent wants the best for their child - but, do they really? I watch children at play, at work, in homes and in public places. There's very little individuality to their growing. There's almost always an adult who pushes his/her ideas which really cannot help the neural pathways.

They are compared and contrasted against other children - even their own siblings-yes even in these times when there is so much information floating around. We have a long way to go in understanding the psyche of children. The prefrontal cortex is not fully developed until the 20s.
For Beginners.... At birth, the brain is only 25 percent of adult size and reaches 90 percent of adult size by age 5. A child's surroundings and interactions with others have the greatest impact on brain development during the child's first three years of life. So what we place into an impressionable brain should be of high quality and value. Once administered there's no taking it away! The brain absorbs everything - and I mean EVERYTHING. Be aware when little children are around you. They are watching us.
