6 of family hospitalised; relative accused of lacing food with poison: Police
Bhubaneswar, July 27 -- Six members of a family, including a two-year-old girl, in Jajpur district of Odisha were hospitalised after allegedly consuming food laced with poison, with the family accusing one of its members of poisoning their meal over a domestic dispute, police said on Saturday.
Officials said that the family of Umakanta Ojha, residing in Ojhasahi area of the district, were hospitalised on Friday after members of the family began vomiting and showed signs of nausea shortly after having lunch.
Hospital officials said that the condition of the six victims is stable. "We are doing blood and stool tests of the patients to confirm poisoning," a doctor at the hospital said on anonymity.
Umakanta's daughter Sasmita alleged that her younger sister Asmita laced their lunch with poison over a dispute arising from the latter's marriage.
"Six months ago, my sister eloped and married a man from a nearby area without our family's consent," Sasmita said, further alleging that she had taken a scooter, gold and other valuables while leaving her home.
Despite the family's objections, their relatives recently brought the couple back to their village and let them stay together, leading to further tensions, Sasmita said.
"Two days ago, there was a major altercation and physical brawl in the family during which my sister had threatened to kill all of us," she said."On Friday... She laced the food with poison while my mother briefly left the kitchen."
Mangalpur police station in-charge Jagdish Kar said both sides filed complaints over the altercation and the subsequent physical brawl, which took place on July 24. Though no complaint has been filed over the poisoning, Kar said that police are investigating the incident....
