One of the most common concerns is puffiness, and no, it doesn't always follow a crying session. Puffy under-eyes can signal underlying factors that go beyond fatigue. Medically, the condition is linked to periorbital edema, which is essentially fluid accumulation in the thin tissues around the eyes. This can result from poor lymphatic drainage, allergies, or a diet high in salt. In fact, dietary choices play a bigger role than many realise. A sodium-rich diet not only worsens puffiness but also raises the risk of hypertension, which can itself contribute to swollen, tired-looking eyes. Ageing is another factor. As muscles and ligaments around the eyes weaken over time, fat pads may protrude, creating that telltale puffiness. For short-term relief, cold compresses or chilled eye masks can help constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling. These simple remedies offer quick comfort but may not address persistent puffiness. If puffiness lingers, dermatologists recommend targeted care.
