One scroll through Instagram and suddenly your cart is full of serums, toners and oils promising flawless skin. But in chasing that "perfect glow", many of us may actually be harming our skin. Here are three common mistakes.
Using several strong actives like retinol, vitamin C, AHAs and BHAs might look like a fast route to results, but dermatologists say otherwise. Dr Rupika Singh warns, "Mixing strong actives can compromise the skin's natural barrier, and this can lead to redness, increased sensitivity, and breakouts." She suggests simply using products tailored to your needs.
Exfoliation is important for removing dead skin cells, but overdoing it can damage the skin. "Over-exfoliation, or combining physical scrubs with chemical exfoliants, can strip the skin of its essential moisture and lead to early signs of ageing," Dr Rupika says. Gentle exfoliation a few times a week is enough.
A major skincare mistake is "over-care". In the pursuit of quick results, many wash their face too often or switch products frequently. Dr Rupika notes, "Your skin needs time to adjust. Constantly changing your routine disrupts its balance and can lead to inflammation or breakouts."
