Odisha teen succumbs to burns after 2-week battle for life in AIIMS
Bhubaneswar, Aug. 3 -- Days after battling for her life, a 15-year-old girl from Puri district of Odisha died of burn injuries at AIIMS Delhi on Saturday, officials aware of the matter said.
Odisha Police initially said that the girl was allegedly abducted and set afire by three unidentified assailants on the morning of July 19.
However, hours after the girl's death, police confirmed that no "no other person is involved in this incident".
Officials said that the minor, who sustained 75% burn injuries, died on Saturday after undergoing multiple surgeries and intensive care.
Expressing grief over the incident, Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, in a post on X, said, "I am deeply shocked to hear the news of the death of the girl victim... Despite all the efforts of the government and the round-the-clock endeavors of the specialist medical team at AIIMS Delhi, her life could not be saved."
Leader of Opposition in the Odisha assembly Naveen Patnaik also offered his condolences.
"Deeply saddened and anguished to know that the young girl set on fire in #Balanga area of #Puri District passed away while undergoing treatment in AIIMS. My condolences for the young girl and prayers are with the family members in the hour grief. May God give the family members strength to bear this irreparable loss," he said on X.
The girl's mother, in her complaint filed at the Balanga police station on July 19, alleged that her daughter was abducted by three unidentified men while she was on her way home.
The mother further stated that the accused then took her to the banks of Bhargavi river, poured an inflammable substance on her, and set her afire.
Officials aware of the details said that police has recorded the statement of the victim, who claimed that she fled from the spot after being set afire by the accused and took shelter at a nearby residence.
The victim was admitted at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on the same day, before being airlifted to AIIMS Delhi on July 20.
Odisha Police, however, on Saturday stated that the investigation into the incident revealed that no other person was involved.
"The police have conducted a thorough investigation into this incident. The investigation has reached its final stage," Odisha Police said in a post on X.
"According to the investigation conducted so far, it is clear that no other person is involved in this incident. Therefore, we request everyone not to make any sensitive comments related to this in this tragic moment," the post added.
The death of the girl comes just a few days after a 20-year-old college student in Balasore district set herself afire over alleged sexual harassment by a professor on July 12.
