India, June 3 -- Who doesn't like a sweet treat every now and again? But too much of anything can have a negative effect, and this is especially true for refined sugar and other sugary products. Eating sugar-based products on a daily basis can will take a toll on more than just a person's waistline, and can actually affect how your skin ages. Taking to Instagram, Dr Astha Jani, a maxillofacial and cosmetic surgeon shared a post to reveal how consuming too much sugar can affect the body's aging process and how you look as you grow older. "Excess sugar in your diet triggers a process called glycation, where sugar molecules stick to collagen and elastin proteins, making your skin stiff, dull, and prone to wrinkles," wrote Dr Astha in the caption, warning, "Sweet today, saggy tomorrow!" When you consume excess sugar, it binds to proteins like collagen and elastin through a process called glycation. This can weaken the body's essential proteins, and leave your skin stiff, fragile, and more prone to wrinkles. Glycation damages collagen (which help make the skin firm) and elastin (which provides elasticity to the skin). This can result in dullness, sagging skin, and deeper wrinkles. High sugar intake promotes inflammation, which accelerates skin ageing and contributes to redness, breakouts and uneven tone.
