Sri Lanka, May 2 -- A 28-year-old youth from the Kosgoda area in Ambalangoda has died after being taken into police custody.

The parents of the deceased allege that their son was assaulted while in custody.

The youth, a resident of the Kosgoda-Hatharamanhandiya area, was arrested by the police yesterday following a complaint lodged by his parents with the Kosgoda Police due to his severe drug addiction.

According to the police, the young man fell ill while in custody and was admitted to Balapitiya Hospital, where he passed away today.

When contacted regarding the incident, the Kosgoda Police stated that the youth lost consciousness while in a cell, after which steps were taken to hospitalise him.
