Sri Lanka, Oct. 16 -- Today (16) marks World Food Day, drawing the attention of people across the globe to the fundamental human necessity of food.

The theme for this year is "Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future".

World Food Day was declared by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in 1945.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan government plans to increase the average national paddy yield from the current 4.8 metric tonnes per hectare to 7 metric tonnes per hectare by 2028.

The Ministry of Agriculture has initiated a national food promotion programme 'Punarudayata Arunalu'.
