Sri Lanka, Feb. 1 -- Wild elephants have devastated a large area of coconut plantations and several acres of banana plantations in the Wanathavilluwa Mailankulam farming colony in Puttalam.

Farmers report that nearly 500 coconut trees and around 20 acres of banana plantations have been destroyed by the elephants.

Local residents say herds of wild elephants, which inhabit forests near Wilpattu National Park and Thabbowa Sanctuary, invade the village in the evenings.

Villagers are urging authorities to intervene and provide an immediate solution to the escalating problem.
