SriLanka, Jan. 25 -- The National Building Research Institute identified reckless excavation as the primary cause of a fatal embankment collapse in the Thittagalla area of Ahangama, which claimed the lives of three construction workers.
E.R. Bandula, the Chief Geologist for the Galle District at the NBRI, confirmed that the collapse was triggered by unsafe digging at the base of a seven-metre-high embankment.
The incident occurred at a four-and-a-half-acre site owned by a foreign national, where seven tourist cabanas were being constructed.
Several private companies had been contracted for different parts of the project.
