Sri Lanka, May 4 -- A water leakage has been reported at the iconic Nine Arches Bridge in Ella, along the upcountry railway line.
W.M. Sumanasena, a volunteer caretaker of the bridge, stated that water seeps into the archway during heavy rainfall.
When contacted, a regional official in charge of bridges at the Railway Department confirmed that the issue had been reported and that inspections at the site had commenced.
Meanwhile, our correspondent reports that plaster has peeled off at the base of several arches of the bridge.
The 'Nine Arches' bridge, completed in 1921 according to railway records, is a remarkable engineering feat and a popular archaeological landmark attracting both local and foreign tourists.
