Sri Lanka, June 18 -- Vraie Cally Balthazaar has officially assumed her duties as the Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council today (18), following her election victory on Monday (16).

Balthazaar secured the mayoral position through a secret ballot, garnering 61 votes.

Her opponent, Riza Zarook, representing the opposition, received 54 votes.

The election process was preceded by a tense debate within the council regarding the voting method, with the Colombo Municipal Commissioner ultimately deciding on a secret ballot despite initial proposals for an open poll.
