Sri Lanka, Jan. 24 -- Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thera, currently in remand custody over the Trincomalee Buddha statue incident, was admitted to the Trincomalee District General Hospital today (24) due to an illness.

Prison Media Spokesperson and Commissioner of Prisons A.C. Gajanayake stated that the Thera is receiving treatment under heavy security and has undergone a blood test.

The monk, along with three other Buddhist prelates and six additional suspects, remains in remand custody until January 28.

The charges relate to a tense situation at the Trincomalee Sambuddha Jayanthi Vihara involving the placement of a Buddha statue in alleged violation of coastal conservation laws.
