Sri Lanka, May 1 -- A 23-year-old second-year student of the University of Sabaragamuwa has taken his own life, reportedly following a ragging incident on campus.
The student, a resident of Gampola, had recently attended the university's Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations and returned home shortly after, where he subsequently took his own life. A letter believed to have been written by the student before his death expressed his distress over the humiliation he faced during a ragging incident at the university hostel - allegedly after he wore shorts, which had drawn ridicule. In the note, he reportedly said he was determined to do well in life, but the emotional toll of the incident had become unbearable.
